First, check the flashing, the trim, and around your chimney. You’re looking for cracks or any other signs of damage. Cracks can let in water, which can damage your home, so you want those to be fixed as soon as possible.
Check for shingle damage. Look for any shingles that are lifting, or are broken. If you have asphalt shingles, look for dark spots as those can be a sign that your shingles are starting to crack. For wood shakes, look for cracks, splits, or missing pieces, or any shingles that are starting to curl upwards. Those should be replaced.
Look out for water damage. Your overhangs should be free of water damage. If they aren’t, there’s an underlying problem and that water damage could soon find its way inside, wreaking havoc on your ceilings.
Change your perspective. Look at your roof as you approach your home by car, or coming back from a walk or run. Try crossing the street and getting a view from the neighbour’s driveway to help make sure you aren’t missing anything. Some things, like missing shingles, are easier to spot when you have a wider angled view.
