Throughout the winter, snow and ice on the roof of your house will likely thaw and freeze several times over. With each cycle, the possibility of an ice dam forming increases. Whether the thawing is caused by the outside air warming, or warm air escaping the roof of your house, the water created will flow down the angle of your roof until it reaches a portion that is still cold, causing it to freeze again. Eventually, water will start to back up behind the dam and can seep into your home through the roof, causing damage to ceilings, insulation, walls, and other areas of your home. 

While it doesn’t take much more than uneven roof temperatures to cause an ice dam, they are easily avoided. Here are something you can do to avoid an ice dam from forming on your home. 

In the short term, the best thing to do is to keep snow and ice from accumulating on your roof.
